Welcome Jonathan Mauk, 
Director of Respite and Recreation Services

Jonathan brings more than 17 years of experience in camp operations with 12 of those focused on camp programs for people living with disabilities.

“My most-prized experiences working in therapeutic recreation include my internship with the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center in Colorado and leading a travel program for people with disabilities on the East Coast with Easterseals New Jersey (at Camp Merry Heart),” Jonathan says.
Jonathan, who has a bachelor of science in leisure studies with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation from the University of Iowa, grew up in Ames, Iowa. He has lived in the Colorado Rockies, along the East Coast, Appalachia and, now, the West Coast.

“Before the age of 25, I had traveled to more countries than states,” Jonathan says. “Travel is a passion with more places to see than time. The best spot to get away is a tent in the woods, surrounded by nature.”

And Jonathan never travels alone. “My two border collies, Belle and Balfour, are my constant travel companions,” he says.
Jonathan says his most unique camp opportunity was helping to build the program at Camp High Hopes in Iowa from the ground up as its first camp/operations director. While there, Jonathan developed programs and facilities focused on principles of therapeutic recreation and universal access, ensuring an emphasis on accessibility and adaptability. This included directly overseeing Phase 2 of facility design and implementation and advising on a 30-year capital improvement plan. Jonathan, who is passionate about inclusion and access for people living with disabilities, will feel right at home at Camp Harmon.
